Newton Hills State Park, (1,064 acres), located 6 miles south of Canton off Co. 135, is part of the Coteau des Prairie.
Abundant wildlife can be found in the park, including over 200 species of birds, deer, wild turkeys, marmots, rabbits, red and gray fox and squirrels.
Lake Lakota provides opportunties for swimming (no lifeguard), boating and fishing. Enjoy catching bass, catfish, perch and panfish. The lake is a no-wake zone.
Artifacts and burial mounds found near the park indicate that a Woodland Indian Culture inhabited this region. The area's unique dark forest, amidst a vast open prairie, has prompted many recent legends, including buried gold, robbers' hideouts and horse thieves.
The park hosts the Sioux River Folk Festival each August and FestiFall/Candlelight Walk each October. Breathtaking displays of fall color can be enjoyed September through early November.

Trails: The Woodland Trail is listed in the registry of National Recreational Trails and crosses dense basswood and oak forests, as well as open grasslands. Also a great trail for bird-watchers. Hikers, mountain-bikers and horseback riders share the trails and must respect the rights of other trail users. Cross country skiing and snowshoeing with warming shelter. 6 miles of trails for horseback riding and mountain biking. 8 miles of hiking trails.
Facilities: 136 campsites - 128 electrical, showers, dump station, 9 camping cabins (2 handicap accessible cabins), 10 horse camp sites, group lodge with 4 bedrooms (up to 12 people), 6 picnic shelters, swimming beach, playground, basketball, sand volleyball and horseshoe, bridle trail, equestrian camps with corrals, fishing, handicap accessible fishing dock, boat ramp, handicap access.
