South Dakota Chislic Festival

July 27
Prairie Arboretum, Freeman

On the heels of a wildly popular launch in 2018, the 2019 South Dakota Chislic Festival will be even bigger and better!

New Venue -  Freeman Prairie Arboretum, on the grounds of Freeman Academy. The arboretum is 40-acres area of ponds, grasses, plants, and flowers and more than a mile’s worth of walking paths. This venue will provide a massively expanded layout, allowing for more large-scale chislic booths, craft beer tents, and more.

“After planning for 1500-2000 people and having at least 8000 attendees in less than 4 hours, we heard the message loud and clear: “more room, more chislic, more, frankly, of everything!” said Joshua Hofer, founder of the South Dakota Chislic Festival. “People saw what we put together in 45 days last year. Now they are going to see what we can do in 12 months.”

9AM - 9PM - This year’s event will be a full-day

Live entertainment will begin at noon on the Prairie Rose Arboretum stage and continue throughout the day.
Headlining for the 2019 Festival will be South Dakota favorite and South Dakota Rock and Roll Music Association Hall of Fame’s 2018 Inductee Mogen’s Heroes. They will be preceded by a performance from the eclectic, talented act of Rock Garden Tour, and local favorite Kings of Oblivion will get the afternoon music kicked off.

Beyond music, both returning and new entertainment options will be available. Returning will be the popular Children’s Area, sponsored by Freeman Public Schools. The area will feature games, bouncy houses, and other entertainment for youth. New to this year will be entertainment provided by Sioux Falls-based Thunder Road, including laser tag and more.

New to this year will be a “Mutton Run” – competitive 10K and 5K races hosted by the Salem Mennonite Home, followed by a more laid-back 1-mile run/walk. Prizes, sign-up details, and schedule for both tournaments are all available on the Festival page at www.sdchislicfestival.com.

The Festival’s judged Chislic Competition will return, featuring the region’s top chislic makers battling it out for bragging rights of the best makers of South Dakota’s official State Nosh. This year’s chislic vendors at the Festival will compete in two categories, “Classic Sheep” and “New Age Nosh”. Winners of each competition will receive $250 and a custom-designed trophy.
