Freeman is a dynamic small town, resilient and diverse, with a variety of retail, agricultural, and heritage experiences to explore, all through the prism of a unique Germans-from-Russia heritage.

We are located in the most populous epicenter in South Dakota – conveniently found on Highway 81 just 30 minutes               
from Yankton, and 45 minutes from both Mitchell and Sioux Falls.

On a visit to Freeman, you can experience:

  • Heritage Hall Museum & Archives
    Open May 1 - Sept. 30, by appointment the rest of the year
  • Prairie Arboretum – 40 acres of trees, ponds, walking paths, amphitheater, gazebo, and a gorgeous interpretive center available for private rental and events
  • Schmeckfest – Festival of Tasting. Features a German-Russian buffet meal, an acclaimed musical theatre production, traditional foods and handicrafts
